Brilliant Article! Your efforts has filled my knowledge gaps. I did not know that the game engines are part/subset of real-time engines. Also, your thoughts on improving performance efficiency at the end of your article was super helpful. Thank you so much. 🙂 🙂

I didn’t know that 3D modeling helped with facility management. I can imagine that this would be helpful in taking accurate measurements. Thank you for teaching me a little bit more about software involved in facility management.

  3. Thanks for helping me learn more about laser scanning and 3D imaging. It’s kind of cool to know that they can measure and capture existing conditions. I’m kind of interested to learn how this is can be developed and the different factors that are taken into account.

Any news about the new scanner?

I love that we live in an age where technology can make such a significant impact on our lives both personally and professionally. Bonus that technology gets more and more affordable the longer the product exists. Pretty soon all professions will be taking advantage of this technology. This is a great example of the technology at work! https://www.facilitiesnet.com/designconstruction/tip.aspx?id=39284

Excellent post! I should still 3D laser scanning in Serbia. The company I hired did his job professionally http://www.geourbgroup.com . I am very satisfied. All recommendations.

3D terrestrial laser scanning provides better and more versatile geodetic measurement solutions. The laser scanning technique enables remote data recording, which is particularly useful in inaccessible or inaccessible areas as well as areas with a large number of details. and i decided to hire Geourb Group, https://www.geourbgroup.com ,for 3d scanning of one of inaccessabile areas that i own in Belgrade Serbia.they`ve done great job.

Excellent post! It took me a laser scanning land, last year in Serbia. I came to the engineering firm that did the job perfectly http://www.geourbgroup.com . I am very happy

I need further information about LOD 500 (As-Built Model or O&M Model)
LOD 400 is great for Manufacturing the components, but it is too much detail to operate, and manage the facility. I am talking large Gov. buildings and needing models to work with CAFM.

Hi, I am an engineer at a leading AOI manufacturer, we create 3D images of circuit boards based on shadow moire based systems, there are some competitors who are making laser based systems, i have noticed that all big contract manufacturer companies are usually going with vision based systems instead of laser scanners, though laser scanner offer high height clearance as well as the speed. Can you tell me what could be the major reason behind this? The price is similar as well. I have heard that laser beam does get wider in a few years affecting the accuracy with which they read the height an djust like X ray based system, their source needs to be changed more often??

    • Hi Abhinav,

I work at an imaging company and had some questions regarding AOI for PCBs. Could you get in contact with me to discuss somet of the applications of photogrammetry in the field? Thanks in advance.

  11. Yusuf Othman says:

Excellent article. I was worrying about “only” budgeting for photogrammetry, as opposed to laser-scanning on a movie-project with a few CGI-Aided shots. But I can see now that it is pretty obvious we won’t be needing that level of accuracy at all. Thanks!

Nice tutorial and Sequoia looks like a great meshing tool! Just interested to know what you are using meshes for in Revit? In our experience the mesh is pretty unusable. Are you able to convert to a usable topo surface or do you use it to remodel from?

Would love to more about your workflow!

    Great post Max! Nicely documented.

We are looking to digitize our “field measuring” for ACM panels and/or our Curtainwall Systems. We currently work everything on AutoCad [2D] and not nessaraly looking to provide a detailed/complete image of a building. If there is a method to digitize the surface area/elevation we intend to cover this will significantly reduce manhours.
    Thanks

  17. Joe Rod says:

I would like to 3D model my Tri-Bike and then develope an exploding view for the purpose of maintenance education. The progressing view point would then be developed into an educational video. Thoughts?

    • Margarita Leonova says:

Hello Joe! You would need to model the bike in a 3d modeling package, such as 3Ds Max or Maya. Then either of these software packages can be used to create an exploding animation. If you would like an ultra precise model, I would recommend using a hand held scanner to create a point cloud of the bike and then model the geometry from the scan. Please feel free to email me with any further questions.

  18. Glad you’re enjoying ProEXR. You should be able to use ProEXR to read the .vrimg file directly if you so desire, letting you skip the vrimgtoexr step.

    Cheers!

  38. I just saw a very cool application of Sketchfab. This will also be interesting for those of you who are World Cup enthusiasts.
    http://www.archdaily.com/508569/the-stadiums-of-the-world-cup-as-3d-sketchfab-models/

  39. Nicely written. I really appreciate all the research you put into this.

  40. It was very interesting to here the differences between the terms broken down. Your strength in languages is showing here.

I may disagree on the near ending statement that those doing Scan to BIM work never work in G0 because it is 2D…while we do model everything in 3D, construction documents are still primarily 2D deliverables. We are often asked for just a 2D floor plan or 2D elevation. Our line weights and what is hidden and exposed in a plan view matter to our clients.

Overall, an exceptional blog. Thank you for writing it.

    • Sheri Blackford says:

BIM models are 3D, walls etc are not not done to the G0 level of detail, since G0 is a 2D detail level. This is true of a BIM model even if a 2D image is printed as the model is still 3D.

  41. Hi there! I simply would like to offer you a
big thumbs up for your excellent information you’ve got here on this post.

I am coming back to your blog for more soon.

  42. Jeff Howard says:

Have your tried DWFx format. Internet explore opens them naively.
It uses the XPS embedded viewer that comes with windows.

    • The Sketchfab engine only takes DWF’s and the reason I chose it was because it had the widest range in terms of the number of browsers and devices it would show up on. I know based on our site’s google analytics that only 10% of our users use Explorer so I needed a 3d modeler with more range.
This is a list of all the browsers Sketchfab’s viewer works in which was the most extensive based on my research:
      -Mozilla Firefox
      -Google Chrome
      -Opera
      -Safari (with WebGL enabled)
-Internet Explorer, version 11 and up
-Android 4.0 with Firefox beta and Google Chrome
      -Blackberry default browser

Bookmarked!! I really like your web ѕite!

  45. Remarkable! Its truly amazing article, I
have got much clear idea concerning from this piece of writing.

  46. Thanks for featuring Sketchfab in your test! 2 quick notes:
    – you can easily adjust the rotation axis by playing in the 3D settings with “model orientation”, then re-saving settings an screenshots, I just did it with the above DWF test.
    – we have a beta Revit exporter, letting you publish directly from Revit to Sketchfab, feel free to reach out to hello@sketchfab.com if you want to test it!

    Best,
